Add Component Date Elements

Explains how to use component dates in OfficeConnect reports.

Component dates can be used to generate a unique intersection in a more concise manner for certain types of reports. For example, suppose that you want to see the year-over-year trend for Revenue by quarters for the last 3 years. Your report might look like this:

Example Report Showing a 3-year Revenue Trend by Quarters

You can get this result by creating cell intersections with component dates from the Time element. Note that you get a similar result using other periods from the Time element – only less straightforward.

You can access component dates by expanding Time > Components from the Elements tab in the Reporting pane.

Considerations when Applying Component Dates

Component dates must resolve to the intersection of at least two dates or occasionally the intersection of three components. Using the Revenue Trend example, 7C is the intersection of the Year component 2015 and Quarter component Q1. The Year component is required and must be included in the cell intersection.

The following provides examples of possible combinations

Component Dates Cell Intersection Resolves to
Year and Quarter 2017 and Q3 Q3 of 2017
Year and Month 2017 and March March 2017
Year, Quarter, Month 2017, Q1, March March 2017
  • For example, when combining years, quarters, and months, you must apply one of the months in that quarter to return data. Suppose that your selection: 2014, Q1, and June results in no data. The month of June is not a part of the first quarter.

  • Component time elements cannot be combined with other time elements on the same region. If applied, the other time elements take precedence over any component for that intersection.

Apply Component Dates to a Report

  1. Create a report, such as a revenue trend report.
Example: Apply GL Account, Revenue to rows 6-8.
  2. Expand the Time > Components from the Elements tab in the Reporting pane.
  3. Apply component dates to selected rows and columns. This results in creating a cell intersection for the year and quarter of that year. The following shows FY2016 applied to row 8 and Q4 applied to column F. The combination creates a cell intersection that resolves to revenue for Q4 2016.

Applying component date element to rows and columns
    • Apply a year on each row.
Example: Apply FY-2014 to row 6, FY-2015 to row 7, and FY-2016 to row 8
    • Apply a quarter on each column:
Example: Apply Quarter 1 to column C, Quarter 2 to column D,  Quarter 3 to column E, and Quarter 4 to column F.
  4. Refresh the worksheet.

Component Dates in the Review Pane

The Review pane will indicate if a time element is a component date by appending [Component] after the time element.
