How To Utilize Attributes And Dimensions In Discovery

This article includes suggestions and workarounds. Content may not be accurate for all use cases or represent best practices for the latest release.

How do I use level attributes and dimension attributes in Discovery?

Level attributes and dimension attributes can now be used in Adaptive Discovery in the same way that dimensions are used. Users can filter, group, expand, and break down data by these attribute types, as well as use them in context settings.

To filter data in Discovery:

First, open up the Visual Designer, which can be accessed by clicking the gear icon on the top-right of the screen. Select a dial that you would like to filter, and click “Data Settings” in the Editor. For any given series, the data can be filtered by a specific dimension or attribute from the “Data Filter” section.

Once the “Add” button is selected, there will be a list of dimensions, dimension attributes, and level attributes that are available to be used as a filter.

To break down data by dimension or attribute:

Instead of breaking data down by time, you can choose to break down your data by a dimension or attribute. In the image below, the Product Sales dial is broken down into three different Responsibility Centers: Corporate, General, and Uncategorized data.

To expand data by Dimension or Attribute:

When viewing dashboards, it is possible to hover your mouse over the upper-right end of a dial to expand the data that the dial contains. Click the magnifying glass to show a table of all the dimension and attributes that are available for a deeper analysis.

Once a dimension or attribute is chosen, a new window will appear showing the data involved in each of the categories. From here, it is possible to keep drilling into the dial to get more granular information, as shown below.

To filter by Dimension or Attribute in the Context Settings:

It is also possible to filter a perspective by any dimension or attribute by making changes to the context settings. To do this, click the drop-down arrow from the “Dimension Context” option, and then click “Add”. One or more dimensions or attributes (as well as particular values within a dimension or attribute) can be selected from this list.

(Note: this context setting will not apply for any dial that is “pinned”, as shown in the image below.)
