Quick Tour of Dashboards and Perspectives

Version: DashboardsClassic

Dials are graphs, charts, and other graphical representations of your data. Dials are displayed on dashboards.

A perspective is a group of dashboards, usually focused on a common function like finance or sales. Below is a sample dashboard among several other dashboards. You can switch between dashboards within a perspective by clicking their tabs along the top.

The following shows a sample dial within a dashboard.

Example Dashboard with Dials

Navigation Menu

The top part of the Dashboards page contains two navigation menus.

Context Pane

  • Callout 1 highlights the Context Pane, which displays and lets you select the time period and level of the data you are viewing. If you have access to more than one perspective, click the name of the current perspective for a list of other perspectives you can view. In this case, the perspective being viewed is named Starter Perspective.
  • Callout 2 indicates the list of dashboard tabs available for you to view. Click a tab to bring that dashboard into view.

Context Pane

The buttons and search field in the Context Pane perform a variety of functions:

Button Action
Search Criteria Enter a dimension in the  box to filter the data shown on all dials (for example, enter “Asia” to display only data from Asia).
Refresh Dials: Refreshes all dials on the current dashboard.
Home Context: Clears all filters and restores your default view.
Options: Displays a drop-down list:

Printer-Friendly View: Presents a popup window of the active dashboard, optimally formatted for printing.

Dashboard Snapshot: Takes a snapshot of the dashboard. See Snapshots for more information.

Visual Designer: This option is only available to some users. Click it to load the Visual Designer, which lets you build and manage your own dials, ribbons, dashboards, and perspectives. The arrow to the right of the Options button is used to expand or collapse the Context Pane. (An example of this appears below.) The ed portion of the Context Pane holds filters you can use to change the data displayed in the dials.

Click the arrow to the right of the Options button to expand or collapse the Context Pane. The ed portion of the Context Pane holds filters you can use to change the data displayed in the dials:

Click a date on the Period Selector, which looks like a ruler, to change the time period shown in the dials. Use the arrows to the left of the Period Selector to change your units upward (consolidating into larger units, like changing from quarters to years) or downward (splitting into smaller units, like changing from quarters to months). You can also change units by right-clicking the Period Selector selecting View By, and then selecting the unit you want. Right-click the Period Selector and choose Home to restore your default settings.

Freeform Dashboards

The difference between freeform and standard dashboards is that standard dashboards require dials to be held in ribbons, while freeform dashboards allow you to put dials directly onto the dashboard, then resize and position them however you like. Free-form dashboards give you several advantages:

You can't change an existing standard dashboard into a freeform one.

Create Freeform Dashboards

To create a new freeform dashboard:

  1. Open the perspective to which you want to add the new dashboard.
  2. Click the Edit-in-Place icon Screen Shot 2017-02-13 at 10.48.32 AM.png. You can also create freeform dashboards in the Visual Designer.
  3. Expand the right components pane by clicking the double arrow icon.
  4. Expand the folder in which you would like to save the new dashboard.
  5. Drag Create New Dashboard onto the perspective. Be sure to move your pointer up near the existing dashboards’ tabs, so that you can position it in the order you want.
  6. In the Create New... dialog, click New Freeform Dashboard and enter a name for the new dashboard, then click Create.
  7. Click the Dial icon Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 9.16.13 AM.png in the Components menu.
  • Add existing dials: drag and drop from the folder list to dashboard.
  • Add new dials: drag and drop Create New Dial from the appropriate folder to the dashboard.
  • Arrange dials: drag and drop within the dashboard.
  • Resize dials (see below).
  1. Click Save in the lower left corner.

NOTE: If you can't add the dashboard to the perspective, your permissions may not enable you to edit that perspective. Either choose a different one or create a new perspective.

Resize Dials in Freeform Dashboards

To resize a dial:

  1. Hover your mouse over the edge or a corner of the dial.
  2. When your pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, click and drag. You'll see the dial’s new outline as a dotted grey line.
  3. Release your click and the dial will resize to the new boundaries.
