Use capture mode like in Excel

This article includes suggestions and workarounds. Content may not be accurate for all use cases or represent best practices for the latest release.

In Excel, I can click on the cells I want to reference in a formula. Is this possible in Adaptive?

Yes, it is possible to use Capture Mode in Adaptive.

Capture Mode allows users to create a formula by clicking on other cells within a sheet rather than manually entering the formula syntax. To use Capture Mode, take the following steps.

  1. Enter “=” into a blank cell.
  2. Click on another cell in the sheet to capture it in the formula

Notice that the cell edit box now contains the code of the referenced account, as well as any other pertinent information about the selected cell (i.e. the relative time period or any dimensions). The formula can be further modified by typing in simple operators such as +, -, or *, and then selecting another cell. Each time a new cell reference is added to the formula, separated by operators, a new color is assigned to that part of the formula.

  1. Hit Enter or click on the green check mark when the formula is complete, and then save the sheet. Alternatively, hit the Escape or Cancel button to cancel the formula.

If a formula is created this way, and completed, a user cannot return to and modify the formula in this same fashion. The formula can be subsequently modified by typing changes directly into the cell edit bar, or by using the Formula Assistant, as described below.
